Medication can be important in the treatment of Fragile X-related behavioural problems such as aggression, anxiety, hyperactivity and poor attention span. However, a proper evaluation of the effects of any prescribed medication should always be carried out and where medication has not achieved an overall change for the better, it is advised to stop the treatment and possibly either try some behaviour management approaches or a different medication.
Bear in mind that some medication may take several weeks before it achieves an effect – it is important to inform yourself in advance about the medication and any possible side effects.
In all cases where medication has been prescribed, there should be rigorous consistency in terms of administering and monitoring the use of the medication. Communication between home and school or home and the work place is critical in this regard.
The National Fragile X Foundation maintains and updates information pages on over 100 different medications used in the treatment of aspects of the Fragile X condition. http://www.fragilex.org/treatment-intervention/medication/
